I make contemporary wheel-thrown porcelain inspired by the sea. I work from my garden studio, The Cloud Pottery, located in the countryside near Aberdeen, in the UK. Working as a graphic designer for 20 years generated a fascination for mark making. I make pared-back forms inspired by Japanese and Scandinavian ceramics, which provide a canvas for abstract decoration.

I have lived near the sea for almost my entire life. Beaches are a sanctuary and a place of continual inspiration – from the naturally occurring colours and patterns to the changing light and weather. As well as documenting each visit with sketches and photographs, I spend time gathering shoreline ephemera such as grasses, shells and wool as well as rocks, plastic and metal. These are repurposed to make handmade tools for painting, printing, scratching and impressing on my pots using coloured slips (liquid clay mixed with oxides and stains). The tools and the themes of reflection, floating and surface are used to impart an evocative exploration of Scottish coastal landscapes.
