Makeup brushes needed a makeover, so Lucinda Goulden created a range of natural-fibre beauty tools that are both useful and beautiful. William Morris would approve.

I’m a traditional brush maker and woodturner. I make luxurious, natural-fibre makeup brushes and decorative wooden platters with hallmarked silver. I had been working with wood for about 10 years before I came across the art of brushmaking – now I combine the two crafts. I’ve been creating makeup brushes for just over a year now alongside my platters.

I’m self-taught in the endangered heritage craft of brush-making. There’s very little information around about how to shape and tie animal fibres to make brushes, and the materials are also hard to source. It has been challenging and a bit of a journey to get the brushes to where they are today. But I’m proud to carry on the traditional practice of hand-binding fibres to create brushes that will, I hope, be cherished and last a lifetime.
