I design and make a collection of linen toys by hand in a very simplistic style. All of my designs incorporate natural colours and plain and simple shapes; just stripped back as much as possible, avoiding any gimmicks. The Mr Pickles collection combines the core values behind my brand with a simply stylish design based on fond childhood memories.
When I was a child, I had a tiny rabbit called Idgit. He lived in my pocket for many years and went everywhere with me. He was my inspiration for Mr Pickles and part of the reason why I decided to learn to sew. I love the thought of a child having one of my Mr Pickles products as their favourite toy that goes everywhere with them. It is really rewarding when something you have designed and made is really appreciated and loved; it’s very motivating for me.
Mr Pickles started in March 2016, and I began sewing a few months before that. I’d gone through a bit of a difficult stage in my life; I was struggling with depression and my anxiety was controlling my daily life. I was looking for a new activity to focus on. I tried various sports, but I’m just not a sporty person. Then, when I was travelling in the USA, I saw this little toy in a shop and it reminded me of Idgit, and I decided I was going to make one myself. I bought a children’s sewing machine very cheaply and started to teach myself how to sew, making various little toys.
