I’m Rachel E Millar, a signwriter and lettering artist based in Glasgow, UK. I work with traditional signwriting techniques but fuse them with contemporary typography for commercial clients and to create my own artwork. I set up in 2017 and work from Mount Florida Studios in Glasgow. I have a room stuffed full of paint, signs and equipment; I usually have music on and it stinks of fumes. Around 10 independent creators work in my area of the studios, so there are plenty of people to chat to every day. We’re a very supportive group, which I think is so important to have when you’re self-employed. I spend half my time there and half my time out and about painting. 

I’m based in the south side of Glasgow. I grew up in Glasgow and lived here until I went to art school in Edinburgh. I lived there for four years, during which time I completed a six-month international exchange that took me to Boston, USA. One of the great things about my work is that I can travel for jobs – I do most of my work in Glasgow but also work in Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee and down south in London. I’ve also travelled to Europe and the United States to take part in shows and attend Letterheads meets, which are sign painter meet-ups. There’s a well-connected network of sign painters globally and I quite often help others out on jobs. It’s a great way to make new friends, learn new techniques and see more of the world.
